Obituary of Margery Joan Vinden

Please share a memory of Margery to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

1931 - 2024

Margery Vinden’s long and interesting life came to its earthly conclusion in her 94th year on Saturday, October 5, 2024. A traveler, a teacher, a tenacious individual, she was devoted to her family, her friends, her church, and to her faith in Jesus.

She was born and raised in Lancashire England; graduated from the University of London and taught high school in London for 5 years before meeting her husband, Dickson, in 1956. They were engaged within 6 weeks, married within 6 months, and spent the next 59 years loyally devoted to each other. They travelled the world with their 3 children, spending most of the next 15 years in Ghana and Uganda before emigrating to Canada. They settled in Cannington Ontario in 1969 and became Canadian citizens 10 years later.

In her youth she was a gifted and decorated athlete, in adulthood a busy teacher and mother, and in retirement a painter, a world traveller, a devoted grandmother and great grandmother.

She was staunchly British yet proudly Canadian. She loved numbers and detail, nature and wildlife (except squirrels and geese), and especially the colour blue. Rarely did she miss an episode of Jeopardy, or a tennis tournament. Although frugal to herself, she was generous to others. Her generosity extended to establishing a scholarship fund which covers the school and university fees of many underprivileged girls in rural Uganda who would otherwise never have the opportunities of education.

She will be dearly missed.

Predeceased by her husband Dr. Gilbert Dickson Vinden (1928-2015), she is survived by her brother Jeffery, her three children; Jonathan (Beverley), Christopher (Leslie) and Rachel (Stephen). Proud grandmother of Alex (Elysha), Joanna, Luke (Emily), Victoria, Jacqui and Nicholas; and great grandmother to Maxfield.

Friends are invited to visit the family at Fair Havens Community Church, B2355 Highway 48 in Beaverton on Thursday, October 17th from 10:30 – 11:30 followed by a Funeral Service in the Church. Interment Stone Church Cemetery, Beaverton. If you plan on attending her funeral, please wear something blue in her honour.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to the Dr. G. Dickson Vinden Scholarship Fund to aid financially struggling young women attend Universities and Colleges in southwest Uganda. The fund was established by Margery Vinden in 2016 and helps young women that show academic promise complete their schooling. It is a registered charity, administered by the Ottawa Community Foundation.
